If you are buying your first helmet on a tight budget, the HJC C10 is the one everyone points you towards, and for good reason. It pulled off something genuinely impressive: becoming the first helmet to dip under £100 while meeting the latest ECE 22.06 safety standard. Here is the honest read.
Why the ECE 22.06 bit matters
ECE 22.06 is the current European helmet standard, and it is tougher than the old 22.05 it replaced: more impact points tested around the shell, plus higher and lower speed impacts. Plenty of helmets at this price still carry the older rating. The C10 meeting the newer, harder standard at this price is the headline, and the reason it gets recommended to new riders so often.
How it fits
The internal shape is fairly rounded and neutral, which in practice means it suits a wide range of head shapes rather than favouring a narrow oval. There are no pinch points across the brow, and the cheek pads are plump and firm. Out of the box that firmness can feel tight, but it settles over the first few weeks as the padding moulds to your face, which is completely normal. For most new riders who cannot easily try on lots of alternatives, that broad, forgiving fit is reassuring.
Ventilation
Better than the price suggests. There is one wide chin vent that pushes air up the back of the visor, and two top vents that open fully, part way or closed via a slider, all feeding a permanently open rear exhaust. The vents are easy to operate with gloves on, and on a warm day the airflow is genuinely good. For a sub-£100 lid, this is the area that most exceeds expectations.
The honest catches
It is heavier than premium helmets, at around 1,550g for a medium. That is partly the nature of ECE 22.06 helmets, which tend to be heavier than the old 22.05 ones, but you will notice it next to a £400 lid on a long ride. It is also fairly basic on convenience features compared with pricier helmets. Neither is a real criticism at this price, just a reminder of what you are and are not paying for.
Is it worth it?
For a first helmet on a budget, comfortably yes. You are getting the current safety standard, surprisingly good ventilation and a fit that suits most heads, for around the price of a tank of fuel and a decent meal out. As always, fit comes first: try it on if you can, and buy from somewhere with easy returns if you are ordering online. For the alternatives across every budget, see our best first motorcycle helmets guide, and if the ratings are confusing, our gear safety ratings explained guide breaks them down.
Verdict: The HJC C10 is the budget first-helmet benchmark. Being the first helmet under £100 to meet ECE 22.06 is a genuine achievement, the ventilation is better than the price suggests, and the neutral fit suits most new riders. It is heavier and more basic than pricier helmets, but for the money there is nothing to seriously criticise. If your budget is around £100, buy with confidence.
